BOB has retired moved! Our current platform (the one you are reading right now) is over 18 years old. Rather than continue here, the community has moved to a new software platform! We are excited about the move and hope that you'll come with us.

The new community URL is https://bobj-board.org/.

User accounts have not been converted. In order to participate on the new platform you will need to create a new account. Existing posts have been retroactively assigned to your user name, but are associated with an anonymous account. No personal information (email address and so on) has been transferred to the new platform.

If you have any questions, the "About BOB" forum will remain open for the remainder of 2020, at which point it will be replaced by a static page directing folks to the new community.

Thank you for your support and participation for the past 18 years.

Mark, what was your plan? I can send you a database backup of BOB, which you can then restore. From that point you can try running the conversion script for phpBB3 but you will run into issues. But if you want, that can be a start.

Hi Dave.

I was going to try it locally first, fix the errors and upload the phpbb3 backup on to my server.

I appreciate that you've made some customisations down the years; given that it's an upgrade to phpbb3, I'd expect some "fun" anyway.

I don't have the technical expertise to do much, but if it's going to continue to be a "live" board, I'm happy to help moderate while I still have a reason to visit - I report enough of the spam, I may as well delete it too …

@Mark @Dave

Let us know if you need help. BOB topics have kind'of launch a new era of my career (remember the Downloads section !) so I will be happy to give some time.

Got xp on all major web languages including php. If there is customization we can work together using either github/bitbucket or other coding platform.

Any update?

I don't have much technical ability, but I have certainly used the power of BOB to answer my reporting questions over many years.

Thanks!

Hi, folks, I realize we're past due for an update. I have been out of touch for the past few months due to a family issue. (Not COVID related, fortunately, just the regular cycle of life.)

I have not turned off the forum as scheduled; it's not "read only" just yet. But the deadline for the end of the year is a hard deadline, the server that we're currently on has been running for years, and is well past its useful life. Our hosting company has been sold (twice, I think) while we remained on the same hardware.

As mentioned previously, I do not see the forum continuing in the current format. phpBB2 is too old. The core code base for BOB was written in 2002! There have been several problems (solved, or we wouldn't be here) with compatibility of various versions of PHP as we upgrade. Not only is our current hardware getting a little long in the tooth, our operating system, database, and PHP platform all require upgrades.

It's not a funds issue. I have been paying for the hosting for the past several years, and I could continue to do so. Money problems are easy to solve. icon_smile.gif I am not as young as I was in 2002 (go figure) and don't have the energy to take on a conversion project today like I did back then.

But hey, if it ends soon, wow. what a ride it was, icon_mrgreen.gif

Hi Dave.

BOB have given me a lot to me all this years, and I really want to give back time on this project. Is it an option to get some data (maybe not the full database) but a small part to run some work and experiments ?

I want to see if upgrade to newer version of phpBB or other system is possible.

(my email ? take my BOB login before the @ and my website for after)

Thanks !

I can give you the Bob-Beta database to experiment on.

When phpBB3 came out there definitely was an upgrade path / conversion process. The problem is, for better or worse, I made a significant number of changes to the system. It would be okay if I had just added, but I actually removed some fields that I knew we were not going to use.

For example, the core phpBB2 system came with a Private Message system. Those tables are completely gone, and foreign keys to those tables are also removed.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that, I will give a look this week on the data and check what can be done on my side. It seems to be a very good starting point for experimenting migration paths !

Who want to join me on the boat ? We can init some github repo to share our work,

I have setup a github org for that.

https://github.com/business-objects-board

ok for you @Dave ?

I want to work on a Discourse migration, I have created a first repo to put some data in. The repo is currently private.

Give me your github ID I can invite you in.

Thanks !

If you go back to this post:

http://www.forumtopics.com/busobj/viewtopic.php?p=1069943#1069943

You'll see some information I posted about some of the conversion plans, and also a link to a phpBB2 data dictionary that I created on another site. That might prove useful as you work your way through things. If you come across tables or fields that are not on the data dictionary, then they're modifications that I made during the BOB development.

If you make enough progress that you think you want to move forward, here's what I envision happening.

First, this site will go to "read only" which prevents new user registrations and/or posts.
Second, to preserve privacy, all posts will be assigned to a BOB Archives user, with the username of the current owner of the post being transferred to the POST_USERNAME field of the POSTS table. That way we still get a flavor of who said what (unlike when we converted the LISTSERV posts) but we also don't release private information like email addresses.

Once that change is made, I can do a database backup / dump and turn it over to you for your conversion process. The data structures won't change, but there will only be a couple of users (the BOB account and the guest account) left.

Julien,

If needed, I can provide help with testing. Not so much with coding, I am afraid.

Hello

Working on the Discourse test

I am documenting here https://github.com/business-objects-board/discourse

mainly i am just writing a sql script to copy from phpBB2 to discourse tables. It is an easy process (more for me as BI Consultant lol) but I am hitting an issue on the BBCode syntax that seems to not be handled by Discourse directly.

In Discourse the posts table contains 2 fields for text, raw and cooked. I think that raw is the raw version (discourse seems to support BBCode) but cooked seems a html version.

UPDATE
I have found a rebake function to read the bbCode, it work well and recreate the cooked field !
I am also able to import users. Good news mrs_bob.gif
