Post subject: Can't Export/Replace Universe

I have made a number of local changes to a universe (call it ABC) that is already on the repository and locked under my ID. When I try to export the new version to the repository to replace the existing one, I get the following message:
"The file name (ABC) and the universe name (ABC) already exist in the universe domain. Change the file name and the universe name to export it."

I have Supervisor rights, but not at the General Admin level, and I've had no trouble replacing universes before. Can anyone explain the error or how I can get around it? We're using ver 4.1.1 in Win95. Any advice would be appreciated!

In a message dated 98-09-14 11:27:35 EDT, you write:

>"The file name (ABC) and the universe name (ABC) already exist in the
>universe domain. Change the file name and the universe name to export it."

Andy:

This usually means that something has changed the Universe ID on the local ABC copy of your universe. I have found this happening most often if you do a "Save As..." on the universe as a backup mechanism, and then try to make changes and export. Doing the "Save As..." means that you have a different universe at this point. Later on, if you do a "Save As..." to put the universe back to the original name before exporting you have created a second universe with the same name. Thus, the warning that you are getting.

In other words, BusObj thinks that you are trying to save a new universe using a name that already exists in the repository and is giving you an "overwrite" warning.

Locking the universe in the repository does not prevent this from happening.

I've had other folks say that they get this message without doing a "Save As..." option in the Designer. I have not experienced this myself, but I assume that something along the same lines is happening.

"The file name (ABC) and the universe name (ABC) already exist in the universe domain. Change the file name and the universe name to export it."

Andrew, you must have done a SAVE AS at some point in your modifications and saved a new version of the same .unv file. In essence, you created a new file with a new universe_id. Each universe has an id which uniquely identifies it on the repository. That is why you cannot export this one now; the same file name already exists, but with a different ID.

Easiest way around this is to go into supervisor, and delete the existing universe from the repository, then re-export the new copy on your PC. Your reports will still work, because they key off of the universe file name, not the universe_id (although this was not the case in v 4.0).

Andy,

There is another reason for this message: this can occur when working with different Universe Domains (typically Development and Production) and trying to export the Universes from one to another Domain where you already exported an old version of it.
To get around it, ask the general supervisor to enable you to overwrite Universes in the Repository. You do not need anymore to delete the Universe from the Repository before re-exporting it. With the Supervisor module, you will find this option in the "Configuration" tab, under the "Designer" properties. The command name is "Prevent from overwriting Universe", which is, by default, Enabled ... that means you cannot overwrite by default a Universe (unless it has exactly the same ID in the Repository). So, ask your general supervisor to HIDE this command for you.

Farfadet.
