BOB has retired moved! Our current platform (the one you are reading right now) is over 18 years old. Rather than continue here, the community has moved to a new software platform! We are excited about the move and hope that you'll come with us.

The new community URL is https://bobj-board.org/.

User accounts have not been converted. In order to participate on the new platform you will need to create a new account. Existing posts have been retroactively assigned to your user name, but are associated with an anonymous account. No personal information (email address and so on) has been transferred to the new platform.

If you have any questions, the "About BOB" forum will remain open for the remainder of 2020, at which point it will be replaced by a static page directing folks to the new community.

Thank you for your support and participation for the past 18 years.

Actually I don't want to create topics on bobj-board.org if the import is not validated, as the import need to be done with an empty database (the script is keeping the ids from phpbb to have easy insert queries)
Sounds like a good plan to me. New topics should wait. Even though I have one I want to post. icon_sad.gif

First, very happy to see the board alive and well and being migrated! Thanks for all the effort!!! Is there a list somewhere of issues that have been reported?

Just created an account and have done a bit of browsing and noted a couple of things:

1) What's the organizational order for the categories and topics on the main page? List is currently manageable in size so you can scroll through it looking for the correct topic, but seems like it should have some order, if it's alpha or functional.

2) Special character encoding not working on the code snippet:
https://bobj-board.org/t/count-not-including-criteria-from-where/254471

3) Guessing it's special characters here too in the title, in the body of the post, and reply: https://bobj-board.org/t/bo-4-2-sp8-incorrect-syntax-near-a-a-a-during-install/255247

4) Maybe premature to test this functionality... When trying to search, got the error: Site is under extreme load, search is disabled, try again later

The same !

Not yet. I am wondering what is the best way to track each issue ? My pref will be some kind of bug tracking system like github (so it can be linked to the repo where I am hosting the migration script + documentation)

1/ Actually it is ordered by "activity" (Categories will be displayed in order of activity. To control the order of categories in lists, enable the "fixed category positions" setting. ) I have just switched to fixed (match more or less actual order)

2/ I will look at the code snippet ! It seems to be some html encoding not read by discourse parser.

3/ this one seems different, let me get a look too

4/ seems a temporary issue .... does it work now ? it works on my side,

I have created github issues for 2 and 3 here https://github.com/business-objects-board/discourse/issues

Adding the [color] issue too on github. Will not be able to review it this week as I am not at home but I will check that quickly. Thanks a lot for all the inputs !

Hello some updates !

I have spend some time yesterday on bug #3 and #4 on the github.

Again it is easy fix but it take age to rebake to generate the html back.

- the [color] flag : it was just an issue in the migration script. But I have run a wrong sql query to fix so I will need to reimport all icon_sad.gif
- bug #4 : again this one will be better fixed by a full reimport.

I will work on the last 2 bugs (#1 and #2) then run a full re-import.

Thanks !

Would it help to do your testing on a single forum or something so it runs faster? I can provide a smaller export if needed.

Mmm the bigger the system is the more bugs we will find icon_wink.gif

So I am suggesting to keep the 'all thing'. Additionally as the generated urls will remain the same after each import (because using the original ids of phpbb database) then we can start building the SEO of the new project. So it's not bad !

I am also getting something more effective for the rebake process as it generate first the most recent content (content shown on the first pages).

A good topic for rebake is this one with a 4M posts project:
https://meta.discourse.org/t/my-journey-into-a-massive-posts-rebake-job/84816

Hello again, some update

* I have fixed the 4 bugs reported
* To do that I have make a full reimport, the rebake is in process (it process recent entries first)
* I am able to import only topics/posts without trashing the existing categories or new topics created icon_cool.gif
* I will not force a quick rebake as it consume a looooot of ressources, I prefer the slow rebake system (handle 80 post each 15mn, most recent first) (edit: after around 20h I have 6.660 posts rebaked, so it may take around 91 DAYS to bake everything !) (edit changed to 250 posts so it will take ~35 days)
* I have identified a new defect around emoji here will dig that (edit: fixed now)

Thanks for your help on bug squashing, you can continue ! Thanks!

Hello all

I know that some people are frustrated to not be able to post icon_biggrin.gif

I think we can set for us a deadline for the test. Dave initially wanted to shut down the forum end of August. The forum is already in read-only mode since September 1st. I suggest that we must end the test phase around mid-October not after. Why ? I am thinking that the more time we will have the 2 platforms up and running is not a good thing for the community:

* no way to ask question so people will migrate (more!) to SCN
* no way to change / optimize BOB topics data and forums on the new platform as we want to keep it as sync as possible in the case of a new re-import
* no way to invest time on the new platform (as we are not sure the community is OK with this platform)

Do you think this deadline is too short ?

Deadline is fine with me. As with anything new, there will be issues but it may make it easier to deal with them if there doesn't need to be any more imports.

Hello some updates !

* no other bug reported since my last post: migration seems ok (or nobody is checking icon_wink.gif )
* rebaking process: actually 198k posts baked on 892k posts.
* i think we are good to go for a go-live around mid-october to not loose too much audience. I want to be able to write / review / work on the new platform.

@Dave any suggestion on the schedule ?

Thanks !

Whatever works for you...I have to secure alternate hosting for my other sites (Dagira, etc.) but have been busy with family issues for the past few months. I fully intend to keep the current server up and running through the end of the year.

Even after the server is shut down I plan to keep up a landing page here that tells the story of BOB and directs people to the new location.

Hello

Seems OK for me. So I am planning to go-live on Oct 15th. Let's advertise that icon_wink.gif

Awesome!

Thank you for taking this forward.

How long would you like for me to leave this forum / topic open in case folks want to post questions or bug reports here? Or should that all be directed to the new platform?
