Post subject: Experience with BOBJ on Hadoop

I'm looking for anyone who has deployed BusinessObjects on a Hadoop data source. If you've done that, what is your general impression? Was it fairly simple to make the connection? How is the performance? Are there any advantages or disadvantages of using Hadoop?

I'm guessing no one has been brave enough to lead the way on this. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi Michael... sorry I haven't logged in to BOB in some time and just saw your post.

I did a POC for a client a few months ago where we were tasked with creating universe with hadoop (via Hive) as a DW for product information and structure change control content.

We didn't see any major performance issues and after a brief learning curve (most of the issues we ran into were caused by data integrity issues from source systems) we found accessing the data in hadoop quite manageable. I would say most of the complexity is learning how to best use hadoop than accessing it.

Feel free to ping me if you have additional questions.

Hi,

Did you make the connection via the IDT tool or the UDT?

What are the actual mechanics of connecting to Hadoop?

Thanks

Good morning

Here are the components used to create the Universe:

*BI 4.x IDT
*Hortonworks Data Platform 2.x
*Hortonworks Hive ODBC driver

And here is a summary of the tasks:

*Install Hortonworks Hive ODBC driver on machine where BI 4.x IDT is installed
*Setup ODBC connection on machine where IDT is installed
*Create HDP 2.x Hive server connection in IDT
*Delimit catalog, table and column names for all content added in data foundation
*Have fun hadooping around creating a universe as you have done before! Note given the data volumes we were working with, we designed most computational intense problems within hadoop (Hive & Pig)

some really fun stuff!

I forgot to add that we did also developed some of the computations with R

Very good information. Thanks.

What do you mean by "delimit catalog, table and column names"?

Sorry for the delay in responding.

My apologies for not being too clear. Wrap the catalog, table and column names in quotes. When I checked with the analyst that supported me in this effort, he pointed me to this Hortonworks work instruction that provides more detail in some of the configuration steps:

http://hortonworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Creating_a_universe_on_Hadoop_Hive_Jan_2014.pdf

I did much more to make this integration truly useful with real world use cases for data volumes within a PRD hadoop environment. I will spend some time in the coming days to document the work I did leveraging Hive, Sqoop, Flume, Spark and R for ETL and a pretty kick ass stats/analytic engine.

Also I am looking to publish a reference virtual machine my my hadoop mash up I called it Hadoopalicious in a meeting maybe the name will stick????!!! (and instructions on how to access within the BOBJ framework) in the coming weeks leveraging open source datasets (Public Health and Marvel Universe Social Graph).

Hi All,

Just finished connecting Hadoop and BOXI 4.1 with the following tools
(1) Kerberos for security
(2) Impala ODBC
(3) BOXI 4.1 SP5, IDT
(4) HADOOP

Steps performed as follows

(1) Install and Configure Kerberos
(2) Install Impala ODBC Driver
(3) Create 32 and 64 Bit SYSTEM DSN For Impala ODBC on Server
(4) Open IDT, create a Secured Connection. While selecting the driver type select "Generic ODBC DataSource->ODBC Driver"
(5) Make sure the user you are trying to create connection to Hadoop Cluster have SELECT Privileges on the tables/schema
(6) Enjoy Building Universes

Hi there
Did you manage to do this??
We are just embarking on the hadoop/SAP BO journey and I am having trouble connecting our SAP BO 4.1 sp5 system to HIVE.
The error message I get is
"[Simba][HiveJDBCDriver](500153) Error in set hive server type: null."
I read something aout having to set the path correctly??
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Sarah, I ended up not going down the path to Hadoop, so I can't be much help.

Would you not use rather IMPALA or VORA to access Hadoop I wonder?..

Also, I strongly recommend you try it with a recent version of SAP BI BusObjects such as 4.2 SP2/SP3
