What's your experience with SAP BI BusObjects 4.x running on many (virtualized) small nodes (4 CPUs & 16-32 GB each) compared to running on fewer, but larger (virtualized) nodes (8+ CPUs & 32+ GB RAM)?

Hi Andrea,

I am wondering if you find any answer on this. We are in the process to upgrade to 4.x and we would like to learn as much as we can about it.

Thanks,
Patricia

bump again ...
I personally use tall and chunky vm's 8x 64gb and 8x 128gb , but i have seen architectures like what Dwayne Hoffpauir uses that are probably a ton of smaller ones. from an administration & vm cost perspective, less #boxes makes sense to me atleast as long as the capacity demands are met. As long as there is a failover via cluster and redundant job servers, it seems to meet my needs for a large userbase.

other thoughts or experiences most welcome.

More memory the better. Webi is a hog, your webapp will be too, and then you have all the java processes. But if you are using less memory you will have to pay special attention to tailoring your services as to not to eat up the memory.

In 4.x services are wrapped with sub services running within in, so you can edit the service and disable sub services or the top service that you don't need to be running.

Watch out for platform search service, that will need its on special treatment.

For BO v4 8 CPU and 32 GB RAM is minimum.

Anyways you already have a 4 node cluster and it is virtualized. You can fix 32 GB ram for each NODE and ask the VM Administrator to monitor it over 6 months. If the RAM is botteneck it can be easily increased.

The APS Java Process consumes the most memory. if you look at the APS Sizing chart and with DSL, MDAS, Multi Source the memory requirements are almost 64-128 GB high.

in my opinion , and acording to some official docs ,
i prefer larger nodes , but at least 2 nodes for security reason.

generically,
it will keep your network cost at a low level, however it depends on how do u build your nodes and how large is your report.

if there r many large reports in your system , more nodes will be better.
