Post subject: Why are some topics too wide?

icon_question.gif Why do some topics appear wider than others?

icon_idea.gif Most of the time your browser will render the topics as wide as your browser screen allows. But occasionally it will force you to scroll horizontally to see all of the information. Why?

Generally it's one of two things, both with the same end result: there is a long line of text without any breaks (spaces) in it. One example is when someone posts some sample code. A more typical example is when someone posts a very long URL.

You don't have to do anything special to make URL's clickable. If Bob recognizes the code as a web (or email) address, it will automatically make it clickable. But if the URL is very long, the browser has to render the entire thing on one line. Which can lead to horizontal scrolling.

The same thing can happen with long code samples.

There's not much you can do about code; if it has to be that way, it has to be that way. But there is a way to fix a long URL so that it doesn't force the same thing... use BBCode to format the URL into something more browser friendly.

For example, if you have a long URL that forces the page to scroll horizontally, replace it with the following format:
[url=your_very_long_url_here]Short Description[/url]

By bracketing your URL with the BBCode, you have accomplished two things. First, the page doesn't scroll anymore. Second, you can replace a long (and often cryptic) URL with a user-friendly short description. It's a win-win situation.
