Simple question for 4.0. In v4.0 if a user logs into the BI Launchpad will they show what apps they have access to? Example: If Explorer is installed, would it show as a link on the BI Launchpad for a user if they have access to the app?

Yes, What ever the applications (Explorer, Analysis , Webi etc) you grant access to the users in CMC, only those applications are visible in the BI launchpad.

Post subject: Re: New features in SAP BI 4.0

I've just installed BI4.1 on a Window virtual with a decent spec, one thing I have noticed though is how slow it is navigation around the BI Lauch Pad and Webi. Also I've noticed after watching various video's on youtube of demo's of BI 4.1 lauch pad and Webi it seem slow there. Is this slowness a 'feature' of BI 4.1 or is more likely due to not sorting out my CMC config yet or possibly becauses it a virtual machine ? At the moment it would just be too slow for me to use ?

thanks

Slowness is part of BI 4.x.

That becomes tolerable if you have a recent server with 8 processors and 16 Gb RAM.

(please do not ask why 1 processor and 1 Gb were enough for XI 3.1) cryin.gif

I would go with 32+ GB RAM 8+ CPU cores (without hyperthreading) AND separating Apache Web Server from Tomcat (=split setup) as a base setup, pending sizing for the particular requirements.

Avoid SSL if possible (SSL = often web pages etc cannot be cached), if you are using a Proxy make sure web content can be cached.
For virtualized servers make sure the SAPBI server has "reserved" resources for RAM and CPUs.

Make no mistake, the SAPBI4.x platform requires more hardware resources than SAP BusObjects XI3.x for example, because of the new 64-bit architecture, introduction of UNX and thereby DSL service, etc.

@Andreas: how many active users do you have for such a setup? icon_eek.gif

BI4 is so fragile that I would not try a split setup or a cluster, and I never needed to. But I do not have Exxon or NTT as a customer.

Standard BASIC setup, my personal, minimum requirement for any customer.

I did sizing for a customer which resulted in going for 3 nodes (with 50k SAPS CPU power and 50+GB RAM) plus tomcat + apache according to their requirements (Webi against SAP BW, many active concurrent users, large result data sets, etc.)

@Andreas : "many active concurrent users" : aber wie viel? 100, 1000, 10000 people? How million records in the data sets?

I'm wondering how much BI4 can accept without imploding. Out of the box it's not much, although it now seems more targeted to huge companies with full-time admins that anything else.

Sorry, you are asking too much detail. I am not going through a detailed sizing excercise here, I hope you understand.
As I said this is my BASE configuration, MINIMUM Standard I aim for whenever installing SAPBI4 (8+ CPU cores, 32+ GB RAM).

SAPBI4 can handle much, but one MUST SIZE accordingly for it!

This is huge!

When I tell my (biggest) customer that 16 Gb is necessary, he finds that's already too much. And it has hundreds of users (perhaps 40 concurrent).

So I'm wondering in what league you play. Not mine.

16 GB nowadays? My laptop hast 4 CPU cores and 8 GB RAM....
I suggest you go through the sizing excercise here: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-33126
