Post subject: WIJ 20010 - Unable to Reach Application Server

This one is driving me round the bend.

We have an XI 3.1 FP1.8 installation clustered across 2 servers each running an instance of Tomcat and the BOBJ services plus a third server for CMS DB and Filestore. A load balancer set up with sticky sessions balances the two tomcat instances.

The servers have plenty of disk space, RAM and CPU capacity and are not under load.

Our user community is spread across a number of sites

Some (but not all) of our heaviest users are regularly getting the error message:
Quote:
Unable to reach application server. (ERR WIJ 20010)
This only occurs whilst in WebI but can happen at any time during a session with any size report, it has occurred after 2 minutes or 40 minutes.

The issue did appear to be site specific based on three of our sites but has subsequently been reported at a fourth.

I have adjusted timeouts in web.xml files up to 60 minutes and removed the connection timeout from server.xml.
I have checked that all config files are the same across the two servers.
I have tried turning off one of the instances of Tomcat and running everything through a single instance.
I have checked log files and nothing appears out of the ordinary around the time of the failures.

Interestingly I also checked Audit database and when the error occurs after refresh is clicked the report still runs and saves itself to be restored.

I have raised a helpdesk call but nothing has come back yet

I searched for more info on the error code but it is not documented (WIJ errors stop at 20003 and resume at 30000)

This is a huge problem for me at the moment so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Leo

You should set up a trace between the client and your server, usinga packet sniffer to see where the connection is getting dropped. This sounds like poor network connectivity or a faulty switch to me.

I have also found increasing the Java run time settings, on the client, helps maintain better connectivity, see here:-

Thanks,

I had already tried adjusting the heap size on both client and server (server has initial 512 and max 1024 client has 300) apologies for not mentioning it before.

Would you reccomend any particular packet sniffer (wireshark is the one that springs to mind)

Hi Leo,

It was so many years ago, I had to do this icon_eek.gif, when investigating ZABO HTTP problems, we found a dodgy Cisco load balancer was the cuplrit.

I used Ethereals Packet Sniffer:-

Good Luck,

Mark.

I am running into the same issue. Increased Connection Timeout in IIS, web.xml, added aditional WIP servers but still no luck.

Any help or suggestion with this is greatly appreciated!

hello,
i see that you have faced this issue two months ago but I found a solution for me.

in my case the server had two network cards and so http packets were lost...

I desactivated one of them : it worked ! icon_smile.gif

so we are searching for a solution that permit two cards without disturbing BO...

a first thing to do is too change the "maxHttpHeaderSize" from 8192 to 16384 or more in tomcat\conf\server.xml
