I heard or read a little while ago that at some point Deski was going to dissappear. Is there any truth to this ???

There has long been rumors of this. In fact, in XI 3.1, WEBI has been can now run as a rich client with very similar features that DESKI has. It makes logical sense that a company wouldn't want to support two pieces of software that so closely overlap for too long. However, with that said, I don't believe there has been a definitive 'yes' or 'no'.

I would also make the case that there is still a considerable gap in functionality: Complex Breaks, Fit-to-page, etc.

What are the gaps in functionality? I've been told that Rich Client is ZABO but on the Web.

While the functionality gap between the two is somewhat tighter with each new XI Release, Webi is still missing alot of VERY important features that Deski has (VBA functionality, Fit to page, dynamic images, custom breaks etc., I could go on and on...).

I REALLY can't see BO dropping Deski support until they get alot more Deski functionalities added into Webi.

I conservatively figure webi is still missing close to 25% of Deski functions & features...

Here's my short list, although we are still on XiR2, none of these are addressed in XiR3, according to SAP-BO.
1. Cannot edit/run multiple reports at the same time.
2. Lack of Newspaper style table-wrapping.
3. Fit-to-Page functionality is missing.
4. Grouping variables feature is missing from WebI.
5. Building a variable from the list of values in the report feature is missing from WebI.
6. Hiding columns in a block is missing.
7. The combination of no hiding columns + no fit to page causes a lot of wasted space on the page.
8. Editing formulas is difficult due to the lack of right-click menus in Java (can't copy the contents of one cell from one tab to another using the mouse).
9. Lines are too thick, even at the thinnest setting.
10. Lack of a 6.5 style console to view all scheduled documents.

I received a cut/paste from somewhere that my SAP/BO sales rep has access to that says (at this time) Deski is due to be de-supported June 30, 2010.

Of course it was due for de-support as of December 31,2008 too. And until the many features that are actively found and easily used in Deski are reproduced in the WebI version, I can't see users moving forward at a steady pace.

Most of us would continue using our Deski, with the caveat that if anything goes wrong -- we come here and Not depend on SAP for support (Another pain in the a..... issue there...)

Hope this helps all.

Deski will go, maybe slower than SAP would like but it will. There may be a gap between Deski and WebI but part of that gap is now features that WebI has which Deski doesn't. Its a long while since I've worked at a client who used Deski.

I'm at a client who has both and there are things that are missing that make it a lot more complicated to do things.

Rather than a filter on a table for current period, you have to create a raft of If Then Else driven variables. I think as long as SAP/BO can get to a finished article then it may go. The only problem with dropping Deski is that they may lose smaller customers.

Which is probably not a problem at all, in reality. At least, not for SAP BusinessObjects icon_wink.gif

You always might loose some customers, when one decides to consolidate, but I think it is overdue, there are too many tools out there already...Webi, Crystal, Deski, Voyager, Polestar, Bex analyzer, WAD..etc etc etc

I'd like to see some consolidating: Crystal/Webi/Deski and Xcelsius into one tool! Even with possible deltas, the payoff will be greater than any lack of particular features of the new consolidated tool. How often have you faced a customer how is being confused/lost in the maze of all the various tools, and when to use which one... icon_rolleyes.gif
But who at SAP - at top level - really knows about this "issue", and who is bold enough to sponsor such a proposal?

Yes, it rolled out sometime in 2013 it seems.

We already stopped using Deski for report development. we are using only rich client now. as there wont be any support provided to DESKI later.

Thanks

Never heard about an official date for deski end of life, even from BusinessObjects sales director just say, "it will still be there a long time"

But be sure no new functionnalities will be added and it is recommended to use it only to maintain existing full client reports, not developing new ones...

Well, it seems BO is indeed still supporting Deski & it functions in 3.1.
I just skimmed thru BO's latest Fixpack "Fixed Issues" documents (FP 1.7 & FP 1.icon_cool.gif. And I found that there were quite a large number of Deski based issues addressed & resolved in both FP documents.

So I'd say Deski is still quite alive, well & supported in/by BO (thank goodness)!!
