Post subject: look up_data

hi forum,
please let me Know if some body faced the issue.
I have look up function where I lookup table from input data(numeric) and output it as other numeric term.

now i have data feed coming as varchar where the look up function fails to work.giving error as can't convert to numeric.

example:
if inputdata = 8545321 (look up works perfectly)
if inputdata =acd6542 (error says it can't convert acd652 to numeric)
cant i default the out put to some thing else.

itried lookup and lookup_ext they are giving same error.

is there any other way i can handle bad data.

thanks,
shawn

You can query the original data searching for inputdata that cannot be converted (functions is_valid...), flag those rows and insert only the ones that can be converted based on the flag. Then do some logic on the rows to cleanse the data if possible.

If you lookup on a column called KEY in the lookup table and this column is of type number, the expression on the right hand side will be converted to a number. If that fails, you have a problem.

So either the KEY column in the lookup tables becomes a varchar or you convert your varchar input value to a numeric yourself capturing cases where this is not possible due to data values.
