Post subject: CUID, GUID and SI_ID

Hi,

What is the difference between GUID,CUID and SI_ID?
Which ones remain same across environments?
When is CUID assigned as opposed to GUID and SI_ID?
What do they stand for?

GUID - Global Unique Identifier
CUID - Cluster Unique Identifier
SI_ID - Seagate Info Identifier (Seagate Info originally created the enterprise platform)

The GUID is used to identify objects in an object package. I've never used those so I don't know much more about it than that. The CUID is used to uniquely identify an object across different deployments (e.g. development, staging and production). When using the Import Wizard, this value stays the same across environments. SI_ID is used to identify an object in one environment. It does not stay the same across environments.

I'd like to say that CUIDs and SI_IDs are assigned when an object is added to the repository, but that may not be completely accurate. For example, I'm not sure if doing a File->Save As in Designer generates a new CUID at that time.

So is there really any physical significance of the SI_ID as far as migrating objects from one environment to another is concerned.

SI_ID is significant between environments. I'll use an example that I ran into in XIR2 SP2. Deski and Webi documents contain a field called SI_UNIVERSE which stores the SI_ID of all universes used in a report. This makes it easy to find which reports are using a particular universe. I noticed that documents migrated from staging failed to bring over this information. This was caused by different SI_IDs for the universes in the two environments. The solution was to always include the universe when migrating from staging.

Another scenario where SI_ID can bite you is the opendocument function. There is a high likelihood that the id will differ if testing in a dev environment then pointing to production further down the road.

What does this mean? What kind of an object package it is?

Sorry, I cannot expand on the use of the GUID. I saw it mentioned in passing on the R2 Developer Library eons ago. I've never used an object package so I've never looked into this attribute.

From what I understand, GUID is redundant to CUID and it is something that was trickled down from the old Crystal system. They contain the same values.

What is exactly your requirement? Just use SI_CUID field name when you create your query. Here is an example:
SELECT top 10 SI_ID, SI_NAME, si_cuid FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS WHERE SI_KIND = 'CrystalReport'
