Post subject: ODBC Connections for excel Files in CR 2008 not displaying

Hi,
I am trying to create a Crystal Report using a Excel file (on local machine as well remote machine).I successfully created a System DSN ->ODBC Connection for Excel file. But when i tried to open the same DSN on my Crystal Report ,the DSN got connected but the EXCEL file not showing in that connection.
My steps -
1) Create a sample Excel file - only few records
2) Created a System ODBC connection pointing this excel file
3) Opened A Blank Crystal Report
4) Create a New connection
5) Select ODBC RDO
6) Create new connection and selected the newly created SYSTEM DSN
7) check the selected excel is displayed in ODBC RDO connection??

Find attached screenshot for ODBC RDO Connection in CR2008.
Please let me know if anyone does have any solution /suggestion for it.

thanks
Nitin

I find it easier to NOT use ODBC with CR 2008 when connecting to an Excel file. I just make a direct connection to the file. The only thing you have to watch is that Crystal will take values in Row 1 as "Field Titles", so if you have data in Row 1, move it down and enter your own "field names".

Oh ... when it asks for your data source, use the line that reads: Access/Excel ... and the rest of it should be rather intuitive.

hi Chasmin,
Thanks for your response.
DAO works fine ,but it is directing some Excel file (local ).But our requirement is We are scheduling one crystal report to generate excel and sent to FTP location. This Excel file (in FTP) should be the input of new Crystal Report using ODBC (RDO) connection.
I am able to create the ODBC connection, but that ODBC connection is not showing me the selected excel sheet in the Crystal Report ODBC Connection.I tried with Remote as well as local drive Excel also.

I tried on different machine (thought ,it could be Driver specific),but all machines does have same issue.
Is there any settings or driver upgrades require for CR XI R2 /2008 in order to use ODBC (RDO) for EXCEL FILES.I didnt find any comments /resolution in Google too.

please let me know if anyone does have some solution for the same.

thanks
Nitin

I agree with Chamsin.

If you don't have to use an ODBC driver, then don't. That way, if the file gets update (assuming it has the same name each time) the report will always point to that name and that path.

I use this type of connection on several of my reports and have never had any issues.

Hope this helps!

Hello Everybody,
The problem got resolved.
My ODBC (RDO) connection for Excel is working now .It is displaying the selected excel sheets.

Resolution steps -
1) Create a new ODBC RDO connection in CR
2) Right Click on the connection (created)
3) Select "options" in window
4) it will show multiple check boxes for different options.
5) Select the checkbox for System Tables under Data Explorer.
6) click Ok & Exit
7) Refresh the ODBC connection by right clicking it.
8) you should be able to see the selected excel sheets in the ODBC connection.

PFA screenshot for System Table option.

Hope this will help many others who came across same issue.

thanks
Nitin
