Post subject: Migrating Universes

hi,

I know this topic has been discussed several time, but I was unable to find a satisfactory answer, so I am asking it again.

What is the best way to migrate universe from test to prod environments in 1 repository structure.

Thanks
Reema

Create a special user ID which has been granted access to Test AND to PROD universe/document domains.

Log in with this special user ID, import universe from Test, check universe, export to Prod.

Or use Quality Manager as a tool for drag and drop action.

Take the universe from Test and migrate it to Prod.
If you only want some but not all changes of the universe in TEST to migrate to the universe in PROD you most likely will have to modify the universe in PROD by hand.

"Universe By this name already exists....."

What exactly are you doing when receiving this error?

Andreas,

Here is what I ma trying to achieve.

I have two universe domain (test and prod) and 1 repository.

I have a universe called "EKT" and i create it and then move it to test domain and then move it to prod domain with the same name.

After some time a change comes up, I retrieve the universe from test domain, make changes and move it back to test domain, now i want to promote the same change to the universe in prod domain.
Now if I try to export the same universe in prod, it gives me error saying the "Universe by same name already exists,...."

But if I have General Supervisor priv and try to do the above, it gives a warning that the "existing universe will be overwritten"

WHat is the best way to get rid of the error message and successfully promote universe without having GS priv.

Thanks
Reema

The ID you are using to migrate needs to have "Prevent from overwriting universes" disabled in the Supervisor module. Once this is disabled, you will receive a dialog box that will allow you to overwrite rather than a simple warning message. I discourage use of the GS for universe exports. Making sure that this permission is disabled will allow your Designer ID to do the export. HTH!

Just curious, why is that?

Then the designers should have the GS priv too.

Two main reasons...

1. A GS can get around problems that a regular Supervisor can't. I don't like to make something work by doing it as a GS. I prefer to see the problem, understand it, and prevent it.

2. A GS can only export to the root. We don't have anything exported to the root. Everything is at the group level. Nothing is inherited from the root. We can accidently give someone a document or universe they're not supposed to see by exporting it with the GS.
