Post subject: Cannot add an Excel sheet into an Universe

Hi everybody!

I just need to create an Universe from an Excel sheet (with two simple columns). icon_sad.gif

1. I have created my "System Data Source" in ODBC data sources for "Microsoft Excel Driver".
2. I have my Excel sheet in a local folder
3. I create an Universe and when I try to use that connection and error saying "driver not capable transactional mode" is raised.

I have read the official support and I have commented the lines:

<!-- Parameter Name="Transactional Available">No</Parameter -->

in file: "odbc.sbo", as this seem to be the solution.

4. Now I have a different error, saying that:

"DBD:[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver]Optional feature not implemented "

I have searched in lot of forums but I cannot find any solution.

Can you help me, please? Any idea?

Thanks in advance!!

Gabriel

First idea that came to mind: Why don't you use the Business Objects Full Client to retrieve the Excel-data directly?

Hi,

Thanks for reply. I need to load the Excel sheet into an Universe in order to use Excel data mixed with the information of other Universes. I will create Web Intelligence Reports from the union of all the information extracted (from Excel and from other Universes).

What do you mean with Full Client?

Thanks again,

Gabriel

Gabriel

I would recommend that you save the excel file as text and use the Microsoft Text Driver. I have several universes built on text files which are updated regularly without problems.

Hi,
Try the following:

1) Create ODBC connection for the source Excel file
2) Set print area for the section of data you are going to use in the report and preferably give a name for this print area.
3) Try creating a Universe using this ODBC connection. You will see the print area name displayed as a table in the Universe.
4)Select the table and create objects as usual
This worked fine in BO 5.19
Hope this helps.

Post subject: Cannot add an Excel sheet into an Universe (Solution Found!)

Hi!

Thanks to everybody!!

Finally, I got the solution. icon_lol.gif

When adding the connection, it is required to change the parameter: "Size Array Fetch" to 1, in order to read the Excel file line by line and not by area, that crashes as there is no area defined.

Setting a print are is useful in order to fix the lenght of the file but doesn´t avoid this kind of crash, but it is a good idea to define better the data to be imported in the Universe.

Thanks everybody!! crazy.gif

Hi,

I need to create an Universe using an Excel Sheet

I am trying:

- To create a new connection with Generic ODBC Datasource with Excel as Data Source. But what could username and password be?

- How would we import/upload/load the excel file.

I am all confused. I could not go any further with the steps mentioned in this post.

Any help would be apprecaited.
Thanks

Hi,

When creating the ODBC connection you are specifying where the Excel file is, as you can link the Connection with the file you want (Use System DNS and select Excel Workbook linked). Don´t put any user and password and you won´t find any problem.

With this, you have two of your problems solved: The Excel location (you can modify it directly in the place you associate with the ODBC connection) and the user/password.

Now, do what I describe in the previous post and it should work. Try and tell me.

Good luck!!

Hi Gabriel,

This is what i did exactly, Added a new System DSN named Excel Files, I did not configure it to anything just added it and gave it a name,

Then in Desinger XI-R2 i created a new Generic ODBC connection with that DSN and changed the array fetch size to 1.

I still get this error.

DBD:[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver]General error Not enough information to connect to this DSN with SQLConnect. Use SQLDriverConnect.

May be the System DSN configuration is not correct ?

Please let me know if i am missing anything.

Thanks for the help

Gabriel,

I figured it out, I got the connection to work, I did not configure the DSN correctly, It was my mistake.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi again icon_smile.gif

When create the Connection, don´t forget to select the correct Driver (Microsoft Excel Driver .xls) and to associate with the Excel File (there is a button to do that). This is in the Control Panel --> ODBC Connection --> System DNS.

In the Designer, create a New Universe, and in the Connection, use the "Generic ODBC3 datasource" (instead of the ODBC). Then change Array Fetch Size to 1 and Test the connection.

Check that the Excel file exists and it is closed and it has no password if you have no specified it. Create a Print are if you want as another forum member suggested.

Bye!!

Thanks Gabriel icon_biggrin.gif

Is there an advantage of using Generic ODBC3 datasource instead of generic ODBC Connection

I could create a universe with excel datasource but am stuck with the objects.

The Objects do not parse. Parse failed: Driver Not capable :Transactional Mode error.
