Post subject: BOBJ Admin career - cloud

As a Bobj admin with no development skills, What is the career scope with the move to cloud? SAP is moving analytics to the cloud, along with HANA, and S/4 etc........

What should be the next step in Administration?

I'd specialize in SAP BW rather than SAP BOBJ - there's more money in it and arguably a better future too. From there you can move into SAP ABAP and work on all the modules like FI/MM/CO etc.

isn't BW being replaced by HANA?

Wouldn't HANA be the next thing? or the S/4 HANA?

Judging from my recent job searching activities and looking at the tech reqs of a lot of implementations across the US/world, BW is much more common in the current market and near future, presumably because of how prohibitively expensive HANA has been. Learning views and working in the HANA environment would be great, but it's probably not the best cost benefit option to get your skills to match what many people want in a new hire.

HANA is the application platform which BW sits on, so having them both would be relevant; BW is strongly related to ABAP which is the main building blocks of SAP itself, including FI and MM.

I'd say that a career in core SAP ERP rather than SAP BOBJ looks more solid at the current time.

On premise installations are not going away anytime soon and SAC is designed to work with on premise SAP BI installs.

Furthermore, Big clients with on premise SAPBI/Universe investment are unlikely to throw this investment away.

This brings me to the new challenges being faced with any SAP BI admin/infra specialist . Configuring connections from SAC to on premise either Live or Import seems to be the real headache currently coupled with the security and authentication protocols.

I have battled for weeks with SAP to configure a connection from SAC to a simple onpremise SAP BI infra. Very little expertise in both SAP and in the marketplace.

This is not a long term career outlook but definitely a skill set currently lacking in the SAP BI space looking to be filled.

SAP are heavily investing in SAC, however, they seem to have come to realise in the last few weeks (and I have this from product management) that the on-premise side won`t go away for a long time yet, so they are redacting some of their 'end of lifetime' statements.

Learning SAC isn`t that easy though (physically, not technically), you have to have a tenant which isn`t cheap, which is a shame, as you can go learn all the first princples of PowerBI or Tableau for free!
