Veronica
I too have been asked to provide a Power BI vs BO evaluation. If you come across any good matrices on functionality, please post.

I think SAP should be publishing these types of things since so many of us out there are frequently required to defend our current infrastructure. After all, it's their licensing revenue that we're protecting.

Thanks Mark, yes I noticed the lack of a semantic layer in Power BI but wondered if they had something else in place or some module to deal with that.

Basically put, we have BO with WebI reporting, we also have SSRS for the 'canned, pixel perfect' reports, and Tableau for dashboards, and it was suggested we look at Power BI as an alternative to replacing our WebI and dashboards.

Am I right in thinking (due to the lack of the semantic layer) that Power BI reports are created similar to how it's done in Tableau (straight from the source)? can these reports be saved and shared/refreshed as they are with WebI?

Have you looked at SAP's dashboarding/visualisation tools, particularly Lumira?

The closest thing in the MS Stack for a semantic layer would be to use Power BI against an SSAS Cube or a Tabular model. Lumira is the closest thing to PowerBI and\or Tableau though in terms of output and use-case, although you need Lumira server to be able to share the content properly (although that does implement HANA as it`s in memory engine which is a bonus!!).

Lumira Server for BI Platform was recently released, so it's possible to share Lumira content in BI launch pad.

Eeech, iPad.

What I meant to say was, yeah, Lumira for BI Platform lets you share within Launchpad, and Lumira Server for Teams has it`s own portal. I`ve installed the former but not dealt with a customer using either yet.

Are there any other products implemented something like semantic layer?

Jasper Domain, Birst Space, Looker Model, SAC Model, OBIEE Repository, I think nearly all the main enterprise BI tools have something!
