Post subject: To Cluster or not to..

Scenario:

Currently on BI4.0 on Tomcat windows 2010. 2 BI servers and 2 TC servers clustered with load balancing and LDAP authentication

Proposed upgrade to BI4.2 with a side by side install with similar number of boxes on windows 2016 ?
Approach 1

Set up one BI and One TC8 separate boxes
Install 4.2 and,
set up LDAP
Migrate content
Validate content
and then CLuster
load balance

OR

Set up both BI Boxes , both Tomcat(TC) boxes
Install
LDAP
Migrate
Validate
Cluster

I am leaning towards 1st approach but I wanted to check with few others on how best is this done with less gotcha's. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Your second scenario gives you fail-over protection that is lacking in the first scenario.

I generally prefer to do identical configurations on multiple servers unless there is a particular service (ex. Lumira) that has high resource demands.

Joe,
In both cases I will have second boxes set up for both BI and TC8 however the imp question I have is do I cluster before setting up LDAP and migrating content or after?

Thanks

If you're doing SSO, then I would do that before clustering, only because there's just one Tomcat instance running and that would make it easier to debug any problems. Other than that, I can't think of any reason why the order would matter.
