Post subject: Measure or Dimension:Building Area Object

I'm working on a previously built universe and found that 'Building Area' Object as a MEASURE, its in Square Feet. As, its a measure SUM is used as aggregate function, hence when used with other dimensions like Year - its aggregating values for all the years, shows like areas are multiplied.

Changed 'Building Area' as DIMENSION (took the SUM off).

Asking to the forum - any reason to keep this object as a MEASURE?

Just a note:
when tried to update the report with this new universe change (different name) - the Map Source Wizared didn't allow the previous Measure Object ,'Building Area' to Change it the Current Dimension object 'Building Area' (as expected); mapped it to another Measure Object in the Universe, added the New Dimension 'Building Area' Object and getting correct result.

Any comments from the Experts?

In universe designer you can set the aggregate function of a measure to NONE if needed.

In this case, if we change the aggregate function to 'NONE' and keep the SUM in the object definition of the Measure it still aggregates the 'Building Area' value when used with Year.

What happens if you remove the SUM from the object definition?

Error in Parsing:
No Aggregate function is defined in the SQL expression in Measure 'Building Area'.

In Univ designer if you press Ok it will save it even if it fails parsing. And it may work in the report. But you must be careful when not using aggregation as it may return more records since they are not aggregating.

Thats right - its returning multiple records, although values are correct for 'Building Area'

I've seen lots of universes where the designer appears to think that every numeric object should be a measure.

Not true. Measures are only things you want to calculate in some way. Think of telephone numbers - would you ever want to know the total telephone number for a group of people? No - well, I wouldn't anyway!

Keep your Building Area as a dimension. If you ever needed the total square footage, you can always create a measure variable.

Created a measure variable using the Dimension - but now if want to add the values, Its not summing correctly.
